"Austrian" White Spruce SoundboardText Box: The European “Austrian” white spruce is rare, expensive, and is used in only the finest pianos.  Picea abies is grown 1000 to 1400 meters above sea level.  Among the most famous piano manufacturers that have used soundboards made from white spruce are Steinway (Hamburg), Bechstein, Bösendorfer, Seiler, Blüthner, Mason & Hamlin, Fazioli, Schimmel, August Förster, and Gebr. Perzina.

Text Box: Many of Europe’s leading piano technicians and musicians believe that the best soundboards are made from the Austrian white spruce “picea excelsa”
(Picea Abies).

Text Box: Detoa started in 1908, nearly one hundred years ago in the European country of Czechoslovakia.  The new Detoa piano actions are considered one of the finest grand and vertical actions made today.  The Detoa company (Detoa Albrechtice, LTD) has manufactured components and actions for many elite piano manufacturers including Bechstein, Petrof, Irmler, Estonia, Weinbach, Bohemia, and Perzina.

Detoa piano actions are made of the highest quality hardwoods (maple, beech, and hornbeam). These woods are lumbered in the mountainous regions of Central Europe.  Selected logs are cut into timber and naturally dried for 6 to 18 months.  The woods are then cut into scantlings and boards of required dimensions.  The wood is dried to 6% dampness in the automated drying rooms.  The rooms are computer operated and work on the principle of water-vapor-drying at higher temperatures.
